When getting started with a child in reading, the best first step is to get to know your child. Take as much time as needed to learn about who your child is and what he or she likes. For example, what is her favorite color? What is his favorite food? Does she have siblings? What is his favorite sport? The child needs to know that you care about him before you jump in to helping him with his reading.
